The Bombay Sapphire Distillery and Whitchurch Silk Mill, Hants
Thursday 22 November 2018

Join us on our Hampshire double bill. Our day begins with a tour of the oldest silk mill in the UK still located in its original building. A gem of industrial heritage it was built on land owned by Winchester Cathedral. The Georgian water mill re-opens this year after a Heritage Lottery funded refurbishment. The Mill still weaves silk on its historic looms - and there will be time to visit the shop!

After lunch we depart for a short drive to the Bombay Sapphire Distillery. The first official records show Laverstoke Mill as a corn mill in the 1086 Domesday Book. In 1719 A French Huguenot leased the Mill and converted it to make high quality hand-made paper. In 2010 Bombay Sapphire commissioned Heatherwick Architects to restore the historic buildings and design a new courtyard and two intertwining glasshouses used to grow the botanical plants which infuse the flavour of gin. It is the winner of an industrial award which recognises the buildings’ environmental sustainability.
